Left: Three of Isaac Makokha’s children have benefited from reconstructive surgery from Operation Smile Mission in Kenya.
A cleft lip leaves a gaping hole in the upper lip, while a
cleft palate is an opening in the roof of the mouth.
These deformities cause severe speech impediments and
eating difficulties and sometimes lead to social stigma.
Reconstructive surgery is relatively simple, taking less than
one hour and costing 20,000 Kenyan shillings on average,
or $290. Isaac paid for Paul to receive treatment in 1986;
however, he was unable to raise funds to support surgery
for his other three children.
In November 2007, Isaac was informed by a local
teacher that Operation Smile Mission in Kenya (OSMIK),
a non-governmental organization (NGO) and partner of
Operation Smile, Inc., was providing free cleft lip and cleft
palate surgery at a hospital not too far from his family’s
home. Within that month, Tom, Sylvanus, and Robai were
all screened and given reconstructive surgery to repair
their lip and palate.
“The children were afraid they would not come out
alive,” says Isaac. “But since their operations, the children
socialize better and have improved in school.”
OSMIK hosts a two-week surgical mission every
November in various hospitals throughout Kenya to
perform free reconstructive surgeries for cleft lips and
cleft palates. With the help of international and local

medical volunteers, more than 6,000 Kenyan children
have received free reconstructive surgery since OSMIK
was founded in 1987. During the 2007 mission,
OSMIK provided 381 children with surgery in three
Kenyan hospitals.
“In Kenya, a cleft lip and cleft palate cause substantial
stigma, leaving children imprisoned in their own bodies,”
says Dr. Bill Magee, the co-founder and CEO of Operation
Smile. “In as little as 45 minutes we can take them and
their families from hopelessness to possibility.”
Operation Smile, founded in 1982, currently provides
services in 26 countries, and to date its medical volunteers
have treated more than 115,000 children and young adults,
allowing them to smile freely from facial deformity.
Johnson & Johnson has partnered with Operation Smile
for more than 20 years, providing volunteers, financial
support, and medical supplies.
“Being able to hand that child back to his parents and
watch the desperation disappear, you’ve given them the
opportunity of hope and have taken a burden off their
backs that must have been enormous,” says Dr. Magee.
For Isaac and his family, hope has been rejuvenated.
The treatment they received will allow them to live a fuller
and more normal life.
