The Gift of a Smile
Isaac Makokha, a farmer from Lurambi,
Kakamega District of Kenya, felt a despair after his second child, Paul, was born with
a bilateral cleft lip and cleft palate. Isaac had undergone reconstructive surgery on
his own cleft lip and palate 28 years prior. Two years after the birth of Paul, Isaac’s
son Tom was born with the same disfigurement. The hereditary problem did not
stop there. Four of Isaac’s six children – Paul, Tom, Sylvanus, and Robai – were
born with the same deformity.
