LOCAL RESPONSIBILITY, VOLUNTEERISM, & DISASTER RELIEF
PEOPLE, PARTNERS, PASSION
Disaster Relief in 2007
As part of the Company’s ongoing
Credo commitment to helping those in need around the world, Johnson & Johnson
continued to partner with local management teams, regional Contributions
Committees, and key relief partners to identify and respond rapidly to critical health
needs and to help communities recover and rebuild in the aftermath of disasters.
A few examples:
EARTHQUAKE IN PERU
In August, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake
struck Peru, causing 437 deaths, 1,350
injuries, and widespread displacement.
Several disaster relief partners assisted
our efforts in distributing multiple
donations of over-the-counter (OTC)
drugs, wound care, and medical products
as well as monetary contributions
to families in need. The Company partnered
with AmeriCares, Arzobispado
de Lima, CARE, Direct Relief
International, Food for the Hungry,
MAP International, Project HOPE,
Volunteers for Inter-American
Development and Assistance (VIDA
Peru), and World Vision. Additionally,
our companies in the region contributed
to the purchase of food,
water, tents, and blankets to assist
those without shelter.
WILDFIRES IN GREECE
After wildfires swept through areas of
Greece in late August, the European
Contributions Committee led the way
in assessing the critical needs of those
most affected. The Committee assisted
in the rebuilding efforts, focusing on
refurbishing health centers and schools
to meet the medical and educational
needs of the affected communities.
TROPICAL STORM NOEL IN THE
DOMINICAN REPUBLIC
In late October, Tropical Storm Noel
caused massive damage in the
Dominican Republic, the Bahamas,
Cuba, and Haiti. In the immediate aftermath
of the storm, Johnson & Johnson
responded with monetary contributions,
OTC drugs, hygiene kits, and
medical supplies to the Dominican
Republic, which sustained significant
damage and casualties.
WILDFIRES IN CALIFORNIA
Nearly a half million acres burned in
Southern California in October,
displacing thousands of residents.
Johnson & Johnson worked with several
of its California-based affiliate companies
and Direct Relief International to
distribute 15 pallets of products to
alleviate some of the acute needs of
those most impacted by the fires.
Additionally, the Company provided
operational funding to support
on-the-ground activities of Direct Relief
International and America’s Second
Harvest.
FLOODS IN TABASCO, MEXICO
In early November, massive floods submerged
85 percent of Tabasco, Mexico,
forcing more than a million residents to
evacuate their homes. With help from
our disaster relief partner AmeriCares,
wound care products, OTC drugs,
antibiotics, food, and water were
distributed. Local Johnson & Johnson
employees, including management
teams, participated in recovery efforts
through our partner Order of Malta.
CYCLONE IN BANGLADESH
In November, a Category 4 cyclone
raked the southwest coast of
Bangladesh with 150 mph winds,
killing more than 3,000 and leaving an
estimated 280,000 displaced. Through
the Company’s disaster relief partners
AmeriCares and Direct Relief
International, Johnson & Johnson
provided safe drinking water, sutures,
wound care products, and two disaster
relief modules, which included many
of the Company’s consumer OTC
medicines. Funding also was provided
to help communities rebuild in the
aftermath.
