“Local Responsibility”
Around the World
Beyond the Company’s global approach to giving, Johnson & Johnson
companies provide support to communities based on local needs.
Some of this support relates directly to a core civic or social need
of the community or to an aspect of the business where the company
can play a leadership role. Local support focuses on efforts linked to
health, education, employment, the environment, and culture and the arts.
In many instances, these efforts foster a sense of “local responsibility” in others,
which helps to further enrich local communities and specific causes.
JUVENILE DIABETES RESEARCH
FOUNDATION: RALLYING LOCAL
TEAMS FOR A LARGER CAUSE
Local communities are not defined
only by geography. A group of likeminded
people, spread across a
country, can form a community of purpose.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research
Foundation (JDRF) is one such example.
Those involved share a desire to
cure Type 1 (juvenile) diabetes through
fundraising to support research.
LifeScan, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson
company, is part of this community.
In 2007, LifeScan became the official
JDRF National Family Walk Team
Sponsor for the annual “Walk to Cure
Diabetes” in the U.S. As part of this
sponsorship, JDRF created a “Circle
of Excellence” program, which
rewards family walk teams with the
most fundraising success.
Engaging families and building
excitement around participation
encourages local responsibility on an
individual and family level. As families
come together to benefit others, the
base of support for the JDRF grows.
