When Robin first found the lump, she didn’t know
where to go. A life-time resident of New Orleans, Robin
felt her world stop when Hurricane Katrina devastated
her hometown. She was forced to leave the city until
September 2006, when she returned to New Orleans
with her two daughters.
With no health insurance from her part-time job,
Robin searched the Internet for Medicaid application
criteria and came across the name of a local clinic,
St. Thomas Community Health Center. Here, Robin was
able to get the care she needed.
The Louisiana Breast and Cervical Health program
is part of St. Thomas, one of the most comprehensive
primary care facilities serving both insured and uninsured
patients in New Orleans. The program was awarded a
Johnson & Johnson Community Health Care grant in
2007, which allowed the clinic to hire Carmelita Johnson,
a full-time mammogram technician.
“When women visit the general health clinic at
St. Thomas they are encouraged to stop by Louisiana Breast
and Cervical Health to get a low-cost or free mammogram,”
says Carmelita, known as CJ to patients and coworkers.
“The goal is to get these women back on an annual
screening schedule, as their health screenings were thrown
off course because Katrina caused many local health
centers to close.”
“My nickname for CJ is Smiley,” says Robin. “Every
time I see her, she is smiling. The entire staff at St. Thomas
PREVENTING DISEASES & REDUCING STIGMA
is constantly smiling, eager to help and always available
when I call with questions.” For Robin, the process from
diagnosis to treatment took about a month. Dr. Mary Jo
Wright from Tulane Medical Center met with Robin to
discuss her upcoming surgery, a mastectomy.
By the time she met with Dr. Wright, Robin had
medical coverage. In fact, the same day she was diagnosed
with breast cancer, case workers at St. Thomas helped her
fill out and submit Medicaid forms – she was approved
that afternoon.
“Knowing the mastectomy and chemotherapy were
covered by Medicaid allowed me to concentrate on my
recovery,” Robin says. Now, a year after being diagnosed,
Robin is cancer-free and working as the after-school
program coordinator at a local elementary school. With
the help of her two daughters, she is beginning to remodel
her New Orleans home.
“I, and lots of other women in New Orleans, appreciate
St. Thomas,” Robin says. “It is truly a blessing.” The
Louisiana Breast and Cervical Health program is looking
to open a clinic in the local public hospital when it reopens
in the Summer of 2008, enabling more women to be tested.
For the past 20 years, the Johnson & Johnson
Community Health Care Program has provided nearly
150 grants to community-based health programs in the
U.S. and Puerto Rico. Grants support innovative programs
that ensure medically underserved people have access to
quality health care services in their community.
