importance of sexual and reproductive health care, good
decision-making abilities, and the availability of MexFam
counseling services. Over the next year, MexFam hopes to
reach 3,000 young people in Chiapas – Juchitán included –
with their messages about safe sex and family planning
practices. With this program, MexFam seeks to reduce the
high incidence of teen pregnancies in Juchitán.
Vinisia and her peer promoters provide information to
adolescents and youth about gender equality, sexual and
reproductive rights, contraception, and local public and
private health centers, like MexFam, where they can go if
they need help.
“It has really been wonderful working with this group
of young people,” says Beatriz Ramos, the MexFam clinic
director in Juchitán. “It’s interesting to see them grow their
knowledge and eagerly share what they learn with other
young people in the community.”
Beyond the “Young People” program, MexFam provides
reproductive health services for vulnerable women, and
works with local pharmacies and health clinics in providing
youth- and women-friendly services. Founded in 1965 by
a group of women and men concerned with the quality of
life in the poorest areas of Mexico, MexFam continuously
provides a wide range of reproductive health services and
self-empowerment information, especially for vulnerable
women and youth.
