In Chiapas, one of the poorest states in Mexico,* people desperately need
medical care and reproductive health services, especially among the
adolescent population. The Mexican Family Planning Foundation
(MexFam), with support from Johnson & Johnson, has created a program
that helps to educate adolescents in Chiapas about sexual health,
empowering them to make healthy choices about family planning practices.
Seventeen-year-old Vinisia Pineda Martinez of Juchitán,
Oaxaca, one of the 20 underserved areas in Chiapas,
visited a MexFam facility out of curiosity. “From the very
first moment, the people at MexFam made me feel like
I was supposed to be there,” says Vinisia. At MexFam, she
participated in an educational program about sexual and
reproductive rights, which helped her make the tough
decisions teenagers are often required to make.
“Once I learned that I had options, I understood that
I should share this knowledge with other young people in
my community,” says Vinisia. She elected to become one of
35 teenagers enrolled in “Young People,” a program that
